Latest results sees BDP post big jumps in revenue and profit

Nightingale hospitals architect BDP shrugged off worries about the covid-19 crisis posting an improved set of numbers last year, with the firm turning in a record income.

The firm, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, saw revenue jump 23% to £131.3m with pre-tax profit up 37% to £12.7m in the year to June 2020. It said the number of staff during the period fell by 47 to 1,261.

Two thirds of the firm’s workload comes from the UK with its next biggest market, Canada, accounting for 16% of business following its purchase of Toronto-based Quadrangle Architects two years ago. UK turnover was up to £88m from £83m last time.

Speaking about its work on the Nightingale facilities, chief executive John McManus said: “The incredible achievement of our healthcare team in establishing six, large-scale coronavirus surge hospitals across the UK in a matter of days stands out as an exemplar of the speed and agility required from businesses in the current climate.”

The firm had a net cash balance of £35.9m at the year-end, a rise of £11.9m on the 2019 figure.
