Two senior Aecom staff also appointed as SLC Rail directors

Aecom has snapped up a 30% stake in an SME which it has worked with on a number of major rail projects in the past few years.

UK-based rail sector firm SLC Rail is currently working with Aecom on the £166m upgrade to the Northumberland line between Newcastle and Ashington, and the £200m West Midlands Rail Programme.

SLC Rail also appointed two senior Aecom staff as directors. Andrew Barker, Aecom’s chief operating officer for Europe, and global transit director Russell Jackson joined the SME’s top team earlier this month.

Founded in 2009, SLC specialises in getting infrastructure schemes off the ground by developing business cases and winning industry support.

The firm said it had an average of 59 staff in its latest accounts filed to 30 September 2020. It posted fixed assets of just under £70,000 and cash of £39,000, down from more than £534,000 the previous year.

Aecom civils managing director for the UK and Ireland Mark Southwell said the firm had a strong existing relationship with SLC, adding: “There is substantial potential to apply our joint approach to more programmes, helping to regenerate regions, towns and cities across the UK.”

The two firms are also working together on the government’s Project Speed initiative, which aims to halve the time it takes to build rail projects by using modern methods of construction and simplified planning processes.
