New Welsh wind farm generates power and controversy in equal measure.

The UK’s biggest on-shore wind farm opens today near Aberystwyth. With 39 turbines, up to 328ft high, the Cefn Croes wind farm will be able to generate enough power to supply 42,000 homes with electricity. It cost £50m to build, and was competed at the end of March this year.

Italian developer Falck Renewables says that in the farm’s 25-year life span it will save the equivalent of four million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. But the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales described it as a “quick fix” that did not make sufficient environmental savings to justify its visual impact.
