Monument, designed by architect Liam O'Connor, will be built in London's Green Park to commemorate those who dies during Second World War air raids
Westminster council gave the go-ahead last night to a £3.5m memorial to those who died in the Royal Air Force Bomber Command.
The monument, designed by architect Liam O'Connor, will be built in London's Green Park after Westminster council gave it planning permission last night. It will house a sculpture of seven aircrew by artist Philip Jackson. The pavilion will be made out of Portland stone and will be 8.5 metres tall.
It is designed to pay tribute to the 55,573 members of Bomber Command who died during bombing raids in the Second World War. It has been championed by the Bomber Command Association and received backing from the three main party leaders David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Gordon Brown last month, despite it being criticised by local residents for eliminating open space.
