So 1 January has come and gone. Hands up those who have registered with one of the competent person schemes for self-certification of electrical work to the new Building Regulations? While you would expect readers of this magazine to have jumped through the necessary hoops, our news story (page 9) shows that many in the industry have not.
The piece also highlights the public’s lack of awareness of the new rules surrounding electrical work in the home. More worryingly, it also shows their defiance of it and a willingness to carry on regardless with DIY work.
It is no surprise that the new laws have slipped in unnoticed. Frankly, Part P does not seem so important given the horrific events unfolding in the Indian Ocean. Thankfully, there are many in the electrical industry rallying round to help the affected countries recover from the devastation wreaked by Boxing Day’s earthquake and resulting tsunami (page 7).
Those who want to put their skills to good use could do worse than have a look at the web site of engineering aid body RedR. Competent electricians are not just needed for Part P work at home.
