Speaking at his inaugural address Manly, who is business development director with contractor Gratte Brothers, said: "We know, and have demonstrated, that we have the capability of delivering some of the world's most exciting, challenging, complex and even energy efficient buildings. The abilities and know-how exist, but sadly do not yet extend very far across the industry."
The new president's aim is to drive this kind of knowledge across the whole industry – something he views as a major challenge for building services: "Unfortunately our industry is so diverse and fragmented that arrangements that can be demonstrated to work for one situation might not be relevant or appropriate for another."
Key issues identified by the new president are contractual arrangements; sustainable development; innovation and off-site fabrication; resources and competencies.
Manly also offered a message to those in the industry who are already adopting new ways of working, and taking a sustainable approach: "For those of you who do not see a problem, or believe you already possess and apply the solutions – do not switch off, for your influence will only sway the majority once 30% of the industry thinks as you do."
