Construction Minister Nigel Griffiths has launched voluntary guidance on dealing with construction waste. The aim is to help building firms procure and use materials more efficiently, and provides advice on re-use and recycling of materials.

DTI research shows that the guidance could save the construction industry 20% of its materials. The Department wants to sign up at least half of the UK’s top 2000 contractors. The impact of this, in aggregates alone, would be in excess of £100 million a year.

The Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) Guidance for construction contractors and clients is a voluntary code of practice. The code was drawn up by a group headed by the DTI consisting of industry, government groups such as Constructing Excellence, and the Sustainability Forum.
