The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers and The Door and Hardware Federation have launched a new Code of Practice covering hardware for fire and escape doors.

The Code is designed to offer professional advice on relative products and standards to help and guide those responsible for fire safety in buildings. It can be obtained as a fully-interactive document or for download by visiting either organisation’s website: www.dhfonline.org.uk or www.gai.org.uk.

• changes to the official standards mean that the SS317 specification for locks for custodial doors can now be applied to a Class 1 lock by any manufacturer, with a specific focus on the lock's dimensions in respect of standard UK cell doors. This follows testing by Pickersgill-Kaye Ltd and Sold Secure Ltd. SS317 is now the de facto standard as it prescribes minimum levels of quality for components, system features and the installation of security systems.
