Guidance on immigrant workers

What papers should you ask a Romanian worker for? If this is a question you can’t answer, but would like to, then you should visit a new online resource from the Home Office. The Home Office warns that new laws later this year will enforce the civil penalties for firms employing illegal immigrants. Those found to use or exploit such workers knowingly will face a two-year jail term and unlimited fine. As it is an employer’s responsibility to ensure workers are legal, the website has a step-by-step guide to help them do this.

All you need to know on drains

Everything you ever wanted to know – and probably a few things you didn’t – about sustainable urban draining systems (SUDS) is contained in a 600-page manual from CIRIA. The SUDS Manual (C697) will set you back £180 (£110 for CIRIA members). More affordable is the Site Handbook for the Construction of SUDS (C698) which is £20 (£10 for members).

ACAS offers tribunal help

Avoid the risks of employment tribunal claims by reading ACAS’s free booklet Managing Conflict at Work. The employment relations organisation warns that badly managed situations such as discipline interviews can lead to costly and time-consuming tribunals. The guide covers the signs, causes, management and prevention of conflict as well as sources of help such as mediation or arbitration.
