The manual is split into three main chapters, which progress from a review of strategic issues to a detailed development of design techniques. The section on developing the design strategy includes a summary of the functions natural ventilation can deliver and the key issues that need to be considered as part of a successful design.

The second section is about tactics, exploring ventilation components and system integration. As well as looking at technical issues, it discusses softer issues such as division of responsibility between members of the design team and the component suppliers and installers, as well as the relationship between the system and building occupants.

The final section concentrates on design calculations and is primarily for building services engineers who have responsibility for engineering the design. It includes a review of the calculations that will need to be carried out and the type of calculation techniques that are available.
