'Board should represent all major stakeholders within the industry’ says NAPIT chief

NAPIT has made a formal application to join the Joint Industry Board.

NAPIT chief executive John Andrews, said: “Much has changed in the electrical industry since the JIB was formed in the late 1960s, especially over the last three years. We have seen the rapid growth of NAPIT-registered electrical contractors in the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors.

“In fact, such has been our growth that NAPIT now has more electrical contracting businesses registered than both the ECA and Select combined.

“In our view, if the JIB is to truly be a representative body for the electrical industry, it should be inclusive of all the major stakeholders within the industry.

“We are in a unique position in that some of our registered members are employers, while others are jobbing electricians who survive by subcontracting their skills and labour.

“So we can see, and have to consider, both points of view – balancing the needs of a business to be profitable with the rights of an employee to be treated fairly and with respect.

“Upholding standards within our industry is NAPIT’s key philosophy, which is why an active involvement and relationship with bodies such as the JIB is so important to all parts of our organisation.”

NAPIT is also launching a new membership package aimed at the larger electrical contractors. Members would benefit from a flat-fee structure that is not dependent on annual turnover figures. NAPIT will be underwriting work warranties, on behalf of members, for electrical work carried out across the domestic, commercial and industrial markets.

A bond scheme is also being introduced, to support larger members on major construction projects.

“We are developing an extremely attractive package aimed at encouraging larger electrical contracting businesses to join NAPIT,” said Andrews.

“By widening our horizons and targeting all electrical contracting businesses, whatever their size, with a range of services and benefits relevant to them, we are making NAPIT more relevant across all sectors of the industry, and even harder to ignore.”
