Darren Brockett has joined piling contractor Rock & Alluvium, part of the Galliford Try group, as managing director

How did you get into construction?

I studied civil engineering at West Kent College in Tonbridge and then got a job as a trainee with Kent County Council which whet my appetite for a career in construction.

What is the biggest challenge your new role presents?

Changing the perception of Rock & Alluvium from a piling contractor interested in small housebuilding contracts in the south-east to one that focuses more on larger contracts in the commercial construction field countrywide.

Who have been the greatest influences in your professional life?

That would have to be working with the staff at developer Stanhope on 14 projects in London. They helped me understand the complete construction process, and deeply involved me in their work, which boosted my confidence.

What was your worst day at work?

As a rookie trainee, I was just four days into my new job when I trod on a ground slab before the concrete had set.

What has been your biggest professional achievement?

Doing the piling for the HSBC tower in Canary Wharf – just the second building to go up Docklands and one of the first jobs to use base-grouted piles.

What is the best bit of advice you have received?

Keep your head down and keep going! That’s what my dad told me.

What is your favourite building?

Arsenal’s new Emirates stadium at Ashburton Grove – and I say that as a Chelsea fan. I managed the piling for the project.

How do you unwind?

I like the great outdoors and, in particular, camping in the New Forest with my six-year-old son.

Would you recommend construction to friends and family?

I’d be happy for my children to go into it. Construction has given me a good living and it’s great to pass a building and think ‘I had a hand in that’.
