Martyn Lambourne is the new contracts director at Wilding Butler Construction

How did you get into construction?

At school I had an interest in construction, and later decided to get involved in a trade through an apprenticeship. A friend of the family was a stonemason, who I had watched working at home, and a local quarry housed a stonemasonry works so it was a natural choice.

Biggest challenge the new role represents?

To follow in the footsteps of my predecessor, Harry Butler. Wilding Butler has a great team ethic and a clear vision that will challenge all of us.

Greatest Influence in your professional life?

When I first entered main contracting I shared an office with an experienced contracts manager, Mike Clelland, who endeavoured to put me on the right path, and alongside him my MD Tony Woodward provided a more diplomatic perspective.

Biggest professional achievement?

Becoming a director at Wilding Butler and completing the fire restoration at Windsor Castle.

Best advice you’ve received?

‘If you don’t know or are not sure then ask’ and ‘If you treat people with respect you will receive it in return’.

Favourite building?

Chichester Cathedral. I worked on a restoration project there for three years and there is something about it that draws you in, I never tire of visiting it.

How do you unwind?

Games of squash with my wife, spending time with my three children, sport, walks along the beach and a glass or two of red wine.

Would you recommend construction to friends and family?

Most definitely. It’s a diverse industry and being part of a team that builds something from scratch or restores a structure can be extremely satisfying.

Did you meet the Queen while working at Windsor Castle?

Yes, she was very knowledgeable and took an interest in the works. The project team was issued a letter and a medallion to thank them for their effort during the restoration.
