Martin Ede is the new operations director for Willmott Dixon’s south Midlands division. He joins from Balfour Beatty

How did you get into construction?

I studied civil engineering at university and always preferred the practical side of the course. It was a natural step to go on site and from then on I was hooked.

Biggest challenge the new role presents?

Substantially growing Willmott Dixon’s Midlands business over the next few years. The company has continued to grow recently so, between us, I am sure it will be a success.

Greatest influence in your professional life?

My family.

Your biggest professional achievement?

I prefer to look back on happy clients rather than one landmark occasion or project. If pushed, then being involved in the conversion of a large part of Kidderminster town centre from a blighted and polluted no-go area into a thriving shopping park. I also believe my approach to health and safety has helped others raise their standards.

Worst day at work?

I had a run-in with the Environment Agency several years ago at a time when there was confusion over the classification of excavated materials and waste. It was unpleasant, but I learnt a lot, not least how confusing the agency also found the legislation.

Best advice you’ve received?

I can never decide between ‘If all else fails, try telling the truth’ and ‘If at first you don’t succeed – delegate’.

Favourite building?

The Colosseum – I can’t wait until it’s finished!

How do you unwind?

With the family. I live close enough to Stratford to feed my passion for the theatre. I enjoy most types of music and I also support Sunderland – someone has to.

Would you recommend construction to friends and families?

If they enjoy challenges, hard work and variety, then I would not hesitate to recommend it.
