Jon Chown is managing director of Galliford Try’s new facilities management business. He joins from Taylor Woodrow.

Why have you made this latest move?

Quite simply it was the opportunity and the challenge.

What will be the biggest challenges in your new role?

Because this is a new business the most difficult hurdle will be establishing a presence in the FM marketplace, particularly the corporate sector.

What areas will you be looking to grow the business in?

Three main target areas: the public sector, developing and growing what we already have; the corporate sector, developing new products; and services and property services, growing what we already have for the housing and insurance markets.

What one change would make your professional life easier?

An abundance of resources. Finding good people is getting harder and harder.

What are your professional goals?

To make Galliford Try FM a successful, well-respected business.

Did you find it easy becoming a manager?

Yes, managing has always been a natural trait, I just need to remember to stop when I get home.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I have received a lot of advice over the years and there are two that have stuck: try to learn something new each day and be a leader not a follower.

Favourite building?

The Palace of Versailles, which is jaw dropping, followed by my summerhouse which is a peaceful haven.

How do you unwind?

My family give me enormous joy and I am quite handy and enjoy most DIY tasks which help to take my mind off things as well as giving me space to think if I need to.

Would you recommend a job in construction to friends and family?

Yes. There are lots of opportunities, you never stop learning, the people are great and each day is different.
