My books special

Some industry figures have put forward their inspirational books in our seven page literary special (see page 11). Some are industry related, many are general interest titles that have influenced or stood out in the memory of those putting them forward. Such an exercise is a testament to the continuing importance and influence of the printed word to both one’s life and one’s career. The internet may be taking over a lot of media but has a mighty long way to go to eclipse the printed book.

Being a list-obsessed male, here’s a few more inspirational tomes – they’re not technical so won’t help you pass your APC or contribute to CPD, unfortunately. They might inspire thought though. Here goes:

Great Expectations, Charles Dickens – Thought I hated Dickens until I read this a couple of months ago. Compelling.

The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson – An amazing dual narrative. While architect Daniel Burnham undertakes the heroic task of assembling the 1893 Chicago World Fair far more sinister exploits are being undertaken by local businessman HH Holmes.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Haruki Murakami – The work of a unique imagination. At times bizarre, terrifying and funny but also strangely touching.

Shelley: The Pursuit, Richard Holmes – You feel Holmes is inside the skin of the Romantic poet.

The Rabbit Omnibus, John Updike – Colossal achievement – social history, fantastic writing and unforgettable scenes and characters.
