Multiculturalism has always been implicitly about public funding for separatist provision.

But it has become clear that, even if some specific projects merit funding, the overall impact is to create more long-term division and social conflict.

Social housing has an unhealthy obsession with ethnicity and arguments for cultural sensitivity.

But such arguments are premised on long-term public funding, and where is the evidence that specific groups actually want to be separate, apart from self-appointed spokespeople in isolated communities? And if they do want to be separate, should this be on the basis of public funding?

The same people who created social and spatial segregation in places such as Oldham with Housing Corporation support are now demanding funding for integration. The “debate” cannot be based around the professional interests of housing providers.

Separatist funding must be phased out or society will face rapid disintegration.
