labour councillors in Westminster are demanding an apology from Conservative council leader Simon Milton, after it emerged that a group of councillors housed families in flats riddled with asbestos in 1989.
District auditor John Magill said the group of councillors, known as the chairmen's group, had housed homeless families in the blocks. The group included Milton, leaders of council committees and disgraced former council leader Dame Shirley Porter.
Magill said the group "had no authority to make decisions on behalf of the council". It ruled the decision unlawful.
Milton said the report had given him and the current council "a clean bill of health".
However, Magill did not investigate whether the group knew of the anti-transfer policy or the asbestos in the tower blocks.
