MITIE is supporting the Bansang Hospital Appeal in its attempts to improve conditions for the 600 000 Gambians who rely on it to dispense life-saving health care.

The company is conducting a major refurbishment of an abandoned 1930s colonial building near the hospital, which will be used as accommodation for 14 key medical staff. In recent years, it has become increasingly difficult for the hospital to retain qualified staff, as poor living conditions encourage doctors to move elsewhere.

The restoration will involve a radical rebuild of the building’s interior. The ground floor will consist of a kitchen, music room and community hall.

Last year, MITIE installed a solar power system at the hospital. Having power available 24 hours a day has contributed to a 73% reduction in the infant mortality rate.

MITIE is using local craftsmen and materials throughout the project, aided by electricians and engineers from the UK.
