A migrant working on a Skanska PFI hosptial site in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire took home just £8.80 for working a 40-hour week, according to union Ucatt.

The Lithuanian man was one of 12 employed by drylinging subcontractor Produm who were each paid less than minimum wage and charged excessive deductions for rent, tools and utility bills, reported Building magazine. Another man was paid £70.20 for a 63-hour week and some of the others were also owed up to five weeks' pay.

Contract Journal quoted Ucatt general secretary Alan Ritchie as saying: 'We've built up a large fact file of abuses. This case is the worst we've seen, these workers are virtually destitute...the fact that this has occurred on a PFI site, using taxpayers' money, is scandalous.'

A Skanska spokesperson told Building: 'Skanska takes such issues very seriously. Since the information was brought to our attention we have worked with Ucatt to resolve these issues.'
