The new construction minister has vowed to ensure the industry has a greater voice in government.

Alun Michael pledged to unite the various Whitehall departments that deal with construction. Michael said: “I’m aware of the issue and want to work with all my ministerial colleagues, particularly those in the ODPM, to ensure that the industry is represented.”

He said he was ready to address the needs of the sector. He was particularly keen to represent small and medium-sized firms, adding: “Construction has a lot of successful major players. But people tend to judge the image of construction on the small, medium and micro firms. I intend to look at this issue.”

Michael, the MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, replaced Nigel Griffiths after Tony Blair reshuffled the cabinet, following Labour’s historic third term in government.
