The Metropolitan Police Service has set up a keyholder database service for owners of audible alarms in London.
Residential and business owners will be sent a letter explaining the benefits of the scheme and given details of how to register over the next nine months.

Under the London Local Authorities Act 1991, owners of properties in London with audible alarms are legally obliged to notify the local police and their local authority with the name of the keyholders.

The new database offers a more efficient and accessible service to the public. Londoners can now register their details at one location, instead of going to the local police station as well as the town hall.

Before the introduction of this database, the Met and local authorities relied on a wide range of methods for dealing with keyholder information, ranging from computer databases to card index systems.

There are two database services on offer. The basic service is free and businesses or residential adresses with alarms can register on the database via freephone number 0800 197 7711.

The premium service gives the public (with or without alarms) the ability to update details of their keyholders online, via telephone or post. It also enables details of plumbers, window boarders and glaziers as well as GPs to be registered. This helps the local police if an incident occurs at a property in the owner's absence, and the emergency services in the event of an emergency.

Keyholders registered on the premium Service also receive a monthly newsletter with information on the Metropolitan Police, policing initiatives and crime prevention and reduction advice.

  • The Keyholder premium service is chargeable and is on 0870 060 1212.
