The Institution of Electrical Engineers and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers have merged to form the Institution of Engineering and Technology. The new institution will be the largest professional society for engineers in Europe, with more than 150 000 members working in diverse disciplines including IT, communications technology, electronics, power engineering and controls.
Speaking at the launch, the IET's president Sir John Chisholm said: "We have major contributions to make in tackling the important challenges facing the world, such as wealth creation, climate change, third world poverty and national and personal security. If we are to succeed, we need to ensure a flow of able, motivated young people into the profession.
The IET has offices in London, Beijing and Hong Kong, and another in Bangalore opening in late 2006.
