Winner

JS Wright & Co

The judges were impressed with the financial figures submitted, which were regarded as “the envy of the industry”. Profits have jumped 75% in the past three years, and in 2007 the company completed the biggest project in its 118-year history.

The judges admired this scheme, the Park Plaza County Hall hotel in London, because they considered it a difficult site to work on. The £4.6m project for Galliard Construction included installing ventilation and air-conditioning to 398 guest rooms, an atrium, restaurant and business centre. JS Wright was able to cut Galliard’s costs by about 10% by applying a series of value engineering techniques.

The Birmingham-based company, which has 110 staff, has set up an awards scheme to reward suppliers and subcontractors.

Runners-up

Kier Building Services Engineers

KBSE’s success was summed up by one client, which said it “always shows particular attention to detail and ultimately results in successful conclusions to projects”.

The company enjoys a high level of repeat business, at about 85%, and is on its 139th building for Goodman, alone. Its showcase project for the awards was an 8,300m2 office unit for Goodman at Uxbridge Business Park, where the challenge was to incorporate energy efficient design within the budget considerations of a speculative scheme.

Airedale Mechanical & Electrical

The company can boast an impressive set of results with a jump in turnover of almost 50% last year and an 85% repeat business rate. Recent projects have included the Bradford Academy, worth £3.2m, which opened last September.

The design division provides a service for design and build projects and is also offered to clients as a consultancy. This means the team can provide clients with feasibility studies, indicative designs, costs and proposals for all their schemes.
