Firm tears up the project management rankings with £1.2bn of work on the books while Gardiner & Theobald reclaims second place in the QS league from Cyril Sweett

There is a major upset in this edition’s rankings of project managers, compiled exclusively for QS News: Mace has made a surprise entry into second place.

The firm has elbowed its way up the league from 23rd position last month.

Mace marketing director Ian Parker put the progress down to diversifying into new sectors on top of its traditional project management stomping ground – commercial and airport work.

Recent PM contract wins include a five-year framework deal from Three Valleys Water, which marks Mace’s first win in the water sector.

This month Mace is boasting 13 project management jobs on its books during the past 12 months, totalling £1.2bn. This is a massive leap forward compared to last month’s seven jobs, totalling £113m.

In the QS league, meanwhile, Gardiner & Theobald and Cyril Sweett continue to battle it for the number two slot. This month G&T has reclaimed second place from Cyril Sweett. G&T reported £645.5m worth of work from 67 contracts on its books for the 12 months to date. Last month the firm had 64 deals worth £590m.

This month’s performance puts it back in front of Cyril Sweett, which has slipped from second position down into sixth, with £548m worth of work from 33 contracts. Last month the company had 36 contracts for the year to date totalling £633m.

Cyril Sweett’s current project management commissions include the £300m Forth Valley Hospital PFI scheme for client Laing O’Rourke/Equion.
