South Yorkshire company L J Monks sets course on a major reorganisation, with the formation of a corporate group, headed by group managing director Warren Monks, and new office and workshop facilities.

In a major restructuring, Doncaster-based LJ Monks Group has announced the formation of a group of related companies, the appointment of a new group managing director and a move to a new purpose-built office complex, workshop and storage facility.

The South Yorkshire company that was formed as a one-man electrical contractor some 30 years ago has grown into an international name with a turnover of around £30 million. Les Monks, 62, founded the company with his wife Maureen. He will now chair the group. Les Monks hands over the day-to-day running of the group to 37-year-old eldest son Warren, who will become group managing director.

The company has been reorganised into a group of three businesses. LJ Monks (Process) is headed up by Bruce Erskine and provides services to the process, water and heavy industrial sectors. LJ Monks (Mechanical and Electrical), is combined with Kelham Building Services and operates in the commercial and retail sector. This division will be run by Ted Burkill. LJ Monks (Building Services) – formerly XLB – will provide m&e services and be under the control of John Taylor. It operates out of Leeds.

Les Monks said: “The time was right to reorganise our companies into a group and also put in place the succession planning we have discussed for more than three years. Warren has the qualifications and experience to head a group which has grown out of all recognition from the business I started.

“We have a five-year plan which is to further develop the business but the emphasis in the medium-term is on consolidation and during that period I will remain in the business in an advisory role. As long as I am enjoying it and making a contribution then I will carry on.”

Warren Monks added: “I am now responsible for the day-to-day running of the group and will aim to follow in my father’s entrepreneurial footsteps. The changes have come about as a result of the growth over the last few years and there will be three other directors looking after the companies within the group.”

The company relocated its office-based activities to the new Long Sandall base at the start of November, while the workshop and storage facilities are due to be ready for occupation by the end of the year.
