Elderly Somalis living in Liverpool's Granby district suffer from disproportionate levels of deprivation, an Economic and Social Research Council report has found.
The report, published on 16 July, found that 70% of the 4500 or so Somali people in the area lived in extreme deprivation.

The report's author, Dr Thomas Scharf, said: "Social landlords there should be taking more of an initiative to listen to their tenants, who were getting, in some cases, a very poor service." Scharf said that language difficulties made it hard for the Somalis to complain to landlords and that, because they lived in homes that are to be demolished under the market renewal pathfinder, only limited repairs could be made.

Claire Stevens, community development officer for refugee charity Remisus, said: "More needs to be done. We have set up a Somali umbrella group, a coalition of charities, and housing surgeries."
