Following the announcement of the government’s plans to ban traditional light bulbs in favour of energy saving options, I think it is worth mentioning additional lighting solutions capable of supporting this drive and reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions further.

Lighting control and dimming solutions can provide a significant reduction in energy consumption as well as extending lamp life. Dimming a light by as little as 10%, a volume that can’t be detected by the naked eye, can save around 10% of energy as well as extending the life of the lamp by 100% – saving money on replacement bulbs.

Such solutions are already being recognised within the hotel industry, where high volumes of lighting are used. Recent research conducted by Lutron shows that in an average hotel, dimming certain lights at certain times can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%, without compromising on the overall feel of the hotel.

While energy saving light bulbs can impact significantly on the energy we use and reduce carbon emissions, there are other methods available to drive these savings further. It is important to support these changes in as many ways as possible and all options should be considered in a bid to cut global warming.
