Giffen Electrical lights up the London Underground’s Waterloo and City line with a little help from Draka’s Firetuf Connecta zero halogen, low smoke modular wiring system.

Giffen Electrical has installed Draka’s Firetuf Connecta zero halogen, low smoke modular wiring system as part of the current refurbishment of the tunnel lighting on the Waterloo and City line.

Predetermined lengths of cable were used between factory-fitted moulded Connecta socket outlets, keeping on-site labour to a minimum.

The company, in conjunction with its partner Custom Design Group of Cwmbran, supplied 4.5 km of cable for the east and west-bound sections of the line, with 600 luminaires plugged into Connecta fittings.

The project also necessitated the development of a new three-phase variant of Connecta specifically for the power supply.

This is the first time Connecta has been used on the Underground. The system was chosen by Metronet Rail, which is responsible for maintaining and upgrading around two thirds of the London Underground network.

The overhaul of the 108-year-old line is part of a major programme of works, which will result in the introduction of at least 20% more rush-hour trains and smoother journeys on the Waterloo and City line.
