The chair of the Local Government Association housing executive has called for local councillors to be given a bigger role on regional housing boards.
At the LGA's housing conference in Liverpool last week, Ruth Bagnall, who became chair of the executive in August, said boards had shown "some anxiety about involving local politicians".
She added the strength of the Government Offices' presence on regional boards had discouraged "involving local elected members, in case they use it to make the case for their own area when it comes to distributing resources."
Bagnall's own East of England board made the decision this month to include members from the three main political parties.
"I think that's a real breakthrough," she said. "I hope that's set in place for all other regions, too."
