The letter from Andrew Hemsley (Computers measure up, QS News, 8 July) sums up the gulf between large practices and the majority of QSs working for contractors or for a small practice as I do. He says, “...anything that releases us from the minor remaining part of the QS role that involves measurement”.

My practice makes a healthy living by producing Bills of Quantities, be it for private clients or for contractors who have had a pile of drawings thrown at them and told, price that lot.

Admittedly a large proportion of our workload is from from the civil engineering sector but I assume that is still classified as part of the construction industry. I just wish the larger practices would stop deriding the majority of quantity surveyors who actually enjoy slapping a scale rule on a drawing.
