A housing charity is to campaign for a change in housing benefit rules to allow young people living in hostels to continue their education.
The Foyer Federation wants adults to be allowed to study full-time and still get housing benefit. At present they lose their benefits if they study for more than 16 hours a week.

The rule hits foyer residents particularly hard because their rent is paid by housing benefit and, being young, they want to improve their qualifications to get better jobs.

Carolyn Hayman, chief executive of the Foyer Federation, said the rule was forcing foyer residents to choose between having an education or a home when they turned 19.

She said: "We are campaigning for the government to urgently review and change the current housing benefit rules."
