Construction began this week on Leicester's £350m new Shires scheme following a start of works ceremony.

It marked one of the city's most important new urban renewal developments, which involves a 60,000m2 city centre retail and leisure destination.

The QS is Cyril Sweett, which joined main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine in carrying out the £150m design and build contract for the development, which is being undertaken by The Shires Limited Partnership.

Designed as an extension to the existing Shires shopping centre, the project is due for completion in 2008. It will include 250 homes and provide 2,500 new jobs.
