The leds, produced by manufacturer Lumileds, have been used to recreate a 1970s-style feel to the dancefloors of the Liquid nightclub in Eindhoven and Get Back in Rotterdam. The dancefloor in Liquid comprises 0·5 x 0·5 m tiles, each housing a large reflector and three Luxeon stars – one each of red, green and blue. In total, 876 Luxeons have been installed. These are operated and controlled in batches of four floor tiles.
Over a single week at full operation of around 48 hours, the dancefloor uses 48 kWh of electricity; in comparison, if incandescent light sources had been used to produce the same effect an estimated 840 kWh would be consumed, with 1168 lamps being needed, each of 15 W. The power system for the dancefloor is based on pwm control with limited duty cycle for optimum light output; remote control is by dmx over an Ethernet Artnet connection.
The cool light of the leds enabled the designer All 4 One to use polycarbonate tiles for the floor, producing further savings as glass was not required. Maintenance is also reduced with the system.
