4.00PM The £7m upgrade of LSE hall of residence took just nine months

King Sturge and RLF celebrated the official opening of a £7m scheme for the London School of Economics this morning. The upgrade of Passfield, a hall of residence, was fast-tracked and completed in just over nine months for the October term.

The grade II listed Georgian building at Endsleigh place is part of the Bedford Estate in Bloomsbury.

Miles Thompson, partner, King Sturge, said the project was challenging: “You know there are always going to be problems with buildings this old but in this case everything that could possibly go wrong with a Georgian building did go wrong.”

David Tymms, director of residential and catering services, LSE, during the project, said the development was completed slightly later than schedule but overall it had been a huge success. The final account has yet to be settled.

King Sturge handled project management and architecture, while RLF was the cost consultant. The contractor was Wallis.

The hall is named after LSE founder Sidney Webb, subsequently Lord Passfield. It has been used by the LSE since 1948.
