JVC has launched the versatile VR-509E DVR, which can record in two modes. In the first mode it is able to record to a DVD in a proprietary format. In the second mode, the system may be programmed to record to domestic video format which then enables playback on any form of domestic DVD player.

Since the DVD is in a consumer format, it provides a quick and incredibly cost-effective way for video evidence to be presented and used by any video security system from retail stores, commercial applications and even by the police for their own operations.
The VR-509E is also one of the first systems in the industry to integrate a time and date stamp within the video image. This means that, at the point of transfer from the hard disk drive to DVD, the time and date stamp is recorded and viewable even on a normal, domestic DVD player, avoiding erasure or fabrication.
MPEG2 compression format achieves high quality pictures and is said to permit high density recording at up to 100 frames per second. This recording includes two channels of audio, while the system can accept up to nine cameras. Recording is achieved on a 320 Gb hard disk drive that can be upgraded with an additional 500 Gb external drive.
Other features include live playback (one, four, six or nine cameras), timer recording and alarm/pre-alarm recording. For network-based operations, an Ethernet interface lets the user plug the recorder into a local/remote network and adjust, or seamlessly operate the unit from a designated PC.
