Luke Starkey of Eastern Power Systems has been named Best Apprentice for 2007 at JTL’s national awards ceremony, which took place at the Tower of London.

The newly qualified 21-year-old electrician is based in Norwich and represented JTL’s East Region. He successfully competed against 10 regional finalists from England and Wales, who were originally selected from nearly 10 000 JTL apprentices.

As the national winner, Starkey received £2250, along with a trophy and a plaque celebrating his achievement.

Starkey said: “I can’t thank enough my JTL mentor, Matt Frere-Smith, and employer, Eastern Power Systems, as well as all the staff at the Eagit Training Centre, who have helped me gain the necessary skills and a wide range of experience that will help me in the future.”

This year, the JTL awards were redesigned to focus on the four key elements of the training framework – practical, theory, key skills and industry test scores – now necessary for apprentices to become fully qualified.
