10:15AM 'Incubator' project in Yorkshire picks up four awards

Jackson Coles was the QS on the recently opened Springboard Business Centre in Stokesley. The budget was £2m, or £148 per sq ft.

Architect McDowell+Benedetti designed the building specifically for start-up companies. The 13,500 sq ft "incubator" building offers them small, flexible and sociable workspaces, including communal areas and training facilities.

The project was funded by Yorkshire Forward, European Development Fund and Hambleton District Council with aim of boosting local entrepreneurs.

It features a number of sustainable elements, including insulation above the level required by building regulations and maximised daylighting and natural ventilation.

The project has won four awards: the RIBA 2005 White Rose Design award for sustainability, the Royal Town Planning Institute regional innovation and sustainability award, the Journal Landmark Environment Award and the RICS Pro Yorkshire Design and Innovation Award.
