Housing associations and developers will have to ensure that sound insulation in high-density housing is top-of-the-range, according to new research.
Architectural lobby group Design for Homes said landlords could expect complaints from tenants about a lack of privacy inside and outside the home as the high-density planning guidance, PPG3, took effect.

David Birkbeck, director of Design for Homes, said: "The housing association tenants we surveyed were upset by the fact that they had very little space to get away from their family.

"This was a much bigger feature than the thickness of the road between them and their neighbour."

Three-storey houses were particularly popular because of their internal space.

The research, which examined life in the kind of high-density developments now required by law, will be published in October and presented at workshops in the government's four housing growth areas.
