Following the breakdown of talks on a merger between the three mechanical and electrical engineering institutions in April 2004, the two electrical counterparts are now considering the creation of a single institution.
The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) has expressed an interest in the creation of a joint body with the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE). Previous talks had included the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) but these faltered, with differences in working practices and internal structures being cited as stumbling blocks.
Comment in the IIE members’ journal reveals that the IIE “intends to give full consideration to the proposal, subject to clarification of the benefits which it would bring to members”. Should negotiations reach an advanced stage the proposition will be put to a members’ vote.
