In the latest issue you used the headline ‘IEE and IIE members vote to merge’ (EMC, November, 2005, p7). Sorry to pick you up on this, but it is not a merger. It is the formation of a new professional institution.

This ‘merger’ phrase is a common misconception and probably one of the reasons that some people voted against it. However, I am pleased that both parties have voted in favour of forming a new institution. It is really needed.

We, the engineering profession, need to be united. There will be teething troubles, but I’m sure that all will work out fine in the end.

Hopefully other professional bodies will want to be in the new institution and we can all be united.
