A telephone support service giving unbiased advice to installers is being increased to keep pace with the 500 requests per week for information.

Gardiner Security's Intruder Division, founded 25 years ago is still the bedrock of the business and a core concern within the industry. Intruder makes up 47 per cent of Gardiner annual sales despite growth to six divisions.

Gardiner's senior intruder technical support technician Dave Mills has been joined by Andy Wales, who has wide experience in the business.

The service, available to all customers, is used as a resource for evaluating product and system options and also gives independent advice on specifications for new installations. Dave and Andy recognise they are used as "sounding boards" for comparing solutions to many applications.

Says Dave: "Equipment we recommend might feature any one of a whole number of manufacturers products, but we always choose on the best product for purpose and price”.

The largest number of calls handled currently by the intruder support team concern wireless systems, one of the least understood areas for installers. Hard wiring remains the preferred option wherever possible, they maintain, even though it is accepted that radio systems are required for listed and preserved buildings because of the impossibility to run cable. Dave says key issues are: the security of the system and has a site survey been carried out to check the signal?

Main enquiries concern small domestic 8-zone wireless systems, cross-over wireless transmitters and receivers. The team says that not all installers appreciate the important points that different panels are needed for commercial installations and the 433 megahertz frequency for domestic purposes is over-used.

Depth of knowledge is essential because at times the team are asked to match products to systems installed a decade ago.
