Constructing Excellence has released its latest Key Performance Indicator findings for 2004.
Figures for the construction consultants sector (which includes engineers and architects) show improvements in all categories.

Profitability levels increased among consultants from 9·2% to 10·5. Productivity (value-added per head of staff) remained static, although the long term trend is upward.

Levels of client satisfaction have risen with 48% of clients rating service at eight out of 10 or better. Elements of service judged include overall performance, quality of service, timely delivery and health and safety awareness.

Training is another area which has seen greater investment. The average number of days increased from 2·2 per employee to 3·2 in 2004. This compares well when compared to the rest of industry average which is just 1·4 days of training per employee.

On the m&e contractor side, KPIs show that median productivity has improved over 10% to £50 000 per employee – this compares to £43 000 in 2003. These rises match strong performance in profitability, which lifted to 4·3%, compared to 3·9% last year.

Dennis Lenard, chief executive of Constructing Excellence commented that the industry should embrace Egan principles if this level of improvement is to continue.
