Construction professionals are unprepared for the impact of the government’s Lifetime Homes Standard, according to the results of a recent CIOB online survey on the impact of the ageing population on the built environment

The standard, which requires design to make allowance for the aged, has been voluntarily adopted on many schemes, including architect Stride Treglown’s housing project in Letchworth (above). It is due to become mandatory on all social housing from 2011 and every new home from 2013. But 45.3% of the survey’s 2,096 respondents said they were ‘not very informed’, and 32.3% said they had ‘never heard of it’.
