Last month’s stories about influential industry figures were very encouraging. With so many PFI/PPP projects in a time of severe financial uncertainty, some young engineers may not be able to visualise and become part of innovative design solutions.

Although the industry is on a continuous track to reduce energy, financial constraints could lead to a young engineer believing that ideas cannot overcome the bottom line of economy and value engineering.

Many of the short profiles proved that ideas and enthusiasm can overcome these obstacles, in particular Terry Wyatt’s story regarding the heat pumps. Ultimately, it was a very good opportunity for young engineering professionals to gain an insight into the difference they can make by being involved in this industry.
