Venue to reopen in 2022
Plans for a £42m upgrade of Paisley Museum have been revealed by Amanda Levete’s practice AL_A.
The upgraded museum will feature outdoor gardens, an interactive weaving studio and a new wing to the west of the building. Its mission is to showcase the Renfrewshire town’s people and its eponymous pattern.
Levete, principal of AL_A, said: “The brief for Paisley Museum is one of the most radical I’ve encountered. Paisley has a proud industrial past and a history of innovation and radical thinking. We have embedded this into our design to create an extraordinary place for the community of Paisley.”
Levete was responsible for the V&A London’s new Exhibition Road Quarter entrance and spaces which opened last year.
When it reopens in 2022 the museum is expected to attract visitors from across the UK and abroad – quadrupling visitor numbers to 125,000 a year.
