Last year Pelco introduced the next generation of its premier integrated dome system Spectra III, which featured multiple back box configurations and three auto focus, high-resolution dome drives with programmable software.
Spectra III features built-in memory to store camera and location-specific dome settings, including labels, presets, patterns and zones. These settings are automatically downloaded if a new dome drive is installed. Two new back box models have been added to the line: an environmental in-ceiling model for outdoor soffits and an indoor surface mount model that installs quickly and easily to any type of ceiling.
There were many software enhancements which increased performance and made programming and operation easy. Window blanking allows a user to programme up to eight four-sided user-defined privacy areas. Other features include an on-screen compass and tilt display; multi language menus and an RJ-45 data port for software uploads and on-site set-up and programming.
Last October, our Bench Testers concluded: "The use of plastics has enabled Pelco to develop a compact, lighter, faster and more responsive mechanism. Add to that advanced image sensors and optics, smart video processing and micro-computer control systems and you have got a highly potent package."

Precision engineering
JVC engineered the TK-C676E for a wide range of surveillance applications. Designed for 24-hour operation, the 360-degree endless panning camera features a professional quality ¼-inch Super LoLuxCCD, which can capture crisp colour pictures at just 0.5 lux. An infrared switching function also means the TK-C676E can operate in the dark with IR illumination.
Under manned operation, the Easy Auto Focus function and 27x zoom lens, with variable pan and tilt speeds, take the operator quickly to the action. In auto mode, users can take full advantage of the Auto Patrol, Area Title and Motion Detection functions for single camera use or as part of a 32-camera system under RS-485 control.
Built for long life and total reliability, the dome is a cost-efficient solution for demanding users, said JVC, and our Bench Testers agreed in July last year.
"It scores very highly in terms of performance, ease of installation, setup and use," they concluded. "It is a sophisticated design, very well built and there is every reason to suppose it will have a long and useful life. Try to see this dome in action as it will give you a benchmark by which to judge the others."

Compact units
Ademco Video has launched two new static dome ranges aimed at closing the gap between conventional cameras and high value PTZ domes. The two-inch and three- inch units all have distortion-free acrylic covers, DSP, AGC and backlight compensation as standard, and come in colour and mono options.
The three-inch colour and mono domes also include a built-in 4.0 – 9mm varifocal, lens. The fast f1.6 aperture also offers "excellent" performance at low light levels.
The units can be used in almost any indoor setting where a conventional fixed camera might be expected. Both domes use a 12v power supply while the three-inch dome also has a 24v option.

Dark bubble
A new dome from Siemens Building Technologies combines reliability and high performance with a number of features said to make it the ideal option for a wide range of applications.
With its dark bubble housing, it is virtually impossible to determine camera direction, thwarting criminals from attempting anything illegal while the camera is averted. Available in CCDA 1415-DN (day/night) and CCDA 1410 colour options, it gives 360-degree operation, reducing the number of cameras required to monitor a given area. Camera operators are able to track suspicious activity with ease.
Its controls also include pre-set panning and zooming capabilities at 280 degrees per second. The dome can also perform a patrol of the site using programmable pattern facilities with the option of linking an alarm input to a preset position to provide automatic movement of the dome to view the alarm.

Vandal resistant
From Sanyo comes a range of vandal resistant domes with integrated cameras. They are designed for environments where rugged enclosures are required, such as banks, schools, prisons, hospitals and subways.
Key features of the dome include a wide choice of configurations varying from standard resolution mono cameras to high-resolution colour cameras with varifocal lens. Die cast enclosures are also available in both surface mount and flush mounted versions. A conical non-grip version is also available. There are a total of five models in the range.

PowerDome's golf victory
Vista has revealed that its new PowerDome featured at the heart of a successful CCTV system for July's British Open Golf Championship at Royal St George's in Sandwich.
The cameras gave comprehensive coverage of all the main spectator, hospitality and other high risk areas, linking back to duplicate on-site and off-site control rooms staffed by police operators.
The six PowerDomes were deployed to cover totally a carefully drawn-up map of the key risk areas, using both the valuable pre-set feature and PTZ control.
The PowerDome range is available in a variety of models, including a six-inch internal colour and a seven-inch external day/night dome. The range comes as standard with 24 privacy zones, with up to eight able to be displayed simultaneously, and can have up to 16 local alarm inputs.

Silky smooth
The action of Panasonic’s WVCS320 was described as “silky smooth” by Security Installer experts when we Bench Tested it in June’s edition. “For the vast majority of applications, with careful siting well away from strong lights, the unit will do a more than adequate job. Picture performance and build quality are well up to Panasonic’s usual high standard and we have little doubt it will do the job it is designed to do superbly well.” The dome is equipped with ten pre-sets and 360 degree automatic panning, so you can easily check any point instantly. The ‘flip a chip’ feature ensures 180 degree tilting by flipping the picture and allowing you to view images directly below the camera. Along with this is the image hold feature, which eliminates image break-up between changing camera positions. The WVCS320 is a feature-packed mini-dome, providing telemetry down the coax for simple, low cost installation.Reader Service No 145
Dome or eyeball!
Writing in the March edition, our Bench Testers thought it might be stretching a point slightly to describe the PIH-7728PW as a dome camera – they thought it a very unusual design and were unsure what to call it, but thought “eyeball” summed up the way it looked and worked. Manufacturer Merit Li-Lin said the product was already one of its most popular dome ranges, available in both colour and mono in a range of resolutions and choice of 3.6mm or 6mm lenses. The 1/3-inch Sony Super HAD chip produces 480 lines resolution, with “excellent” colour rendition and low light performance. Each unit is supplied complete with fixings for false ceilings, power supply and comprehensive manual. As well as looking good in stainless steel, it is vandal resistant and comes with a three-year full parts and labour warranty. Our Bench Testers concluded: “It has a well thought out design that is unobtrusive and blends in with the type of décor found in many modern offices and retail premises. It is keenly priced for a specialist camera and video performance in undemanding lighting situations is very good.”Reader Service No 149
