The technology of dome cameras continues to develop …
No-Zoom dome
The X-dome from Richardson Electronics allows a colour, colour/ mono and also a No-Zoom model. Telemetry control is via coax or twisted pair and, as well as supporting Richardson's own 'factory' protocol, has VCL, Pelco, Pelco coax, Molynx, Vicon, Diamond, Philips, Li-Lin, AD/Sensormatic and Kalatel options (and soon BBV).

The PTZ has four privacy zones, built-in fully programmable preset tours, four programmable patterns, full onscreen titling, Auto Flip function, Optional Freeze frame on preset and a useful resume to any function after a time period. With built-in time and date, functions such as day/night changeover can be scheduled, as well as the normal auto or manual modes.

The No-Zoom dome is a result of Richardson's links to retail and hotel applications. Often a dome camera is sited because of a wish to see up and down a small corridor or aisle or where a fixed camera looking down on the aisle would get temporarily obstructed by a seasonal display or banner. This way the camera can be moved from the control position without having to send an engineer to the shop floor.

For covering entrances
The latest Samsung fixed dome from Asset Security now offers valuable preset zoom capabilities normally only found on much more expensive fully functional PTZ dome models.

When used with suitable control equipment, the SCC-931TP can be programmed to zoom in automatically whenever a specified alarm is triggered, using its 12x optical built-in zoom lens.

This function allows the system to switch from effective wide area surveillance during normal operations to instant detailed close-up inspection of a chosen target area whenever a pre-defined event occurs. The SCC-931TP is IP66-rated for both external and internal use, so one typical application is where it provides coverage of a building's entrance. Linked to a door alarm it will automatically zoom in to capture crisp close-up images of everyone entering or leaving the building. At all other times it will provide wide coverage of the surrounding scene.

The dome is a 480 TV line high-resolution colour camera, which is supplied in a simple-to-adjust cable.

Baxall's first
Baxall has launched its first dome range – the Pro-Dome series of interior and exterior models. The domes feature digital UTC techno-logy, which allows two-way digitised communications on a single cable.

The Pro-Dome series is available as either monochrome, colour or colour/mono, with bubble options of clear or smoked.

All the cameras feature proportional telemetry speed to zoom control, multiple dynamic privacy zones which allow public areas to be masked as required by the Data Protection Act, tours and a choice of languages.

The cameras also have 360 degree continuous pan and 90 degree tilt operation, with a auto flip option ensuring that no blind area occurs during operation.

The domes can be used with the Baxall ZTX7 system which allows many features to be accessed through an innovative quick set key via an on-screen Pro-Dome menu.

Pro-Domes come with a choice of mounting options: wall, ceiling, pendant or direct mounts.

< Senses movement
Bosch Security Systems has brought in an AutoTrack feature for its AutoDomes. This development automatically senses movement and then follows it.

AutoTrack domes will monitor an area on a pre-set tour but when motion is detected the camera will automatically track the movement without intervention from the control room staff, ensuring none of the action is missed.

AutoDome with AutoTrack is suitable for applications including retail stores, banks, warehouses, industrial sites, prisons and school.

The complete AutoDome line includes EnviroDome Outdoor Systems, AutoDome Indoor systems, BasicDome, plus all necessary accessories.

Unique cradle
CSP Technology's vandal resistant range of armoured dome cameras includes the Comet, which is fitted with the company's "unique" camera cradle, allowing the camera to pan manually, sideways and vertically.

It is machined from a solid block of aluminium and can be used externally or internally.

There are ten day/night cameras to choose from, diameter 120mm and height 60mm, and they can be wall or ceiling mounted.

The top-of-the-range model features a high colour 1/3-inch Sony Super HAD 470 TVL 0.5 lux varifocal 4-8mm auto iris lens and is available in a flush ceiling mount.

All camera windows are fitted with Hi-grade heat resistant polycarbonate, which is virtually indestructible. The domes have also been designed with ease of installation in mind.

Each unit comes complete with 1.8m cable, tamper-proof screws and hex key. Some models also include a power light on the PCB.

Pictured is the CSM Atom flush mount dome, which also comes with a corner mount kit.

Potent package
Pelco's premier integrated dome system, the Spectra III, features multiple back box configurations and three auto focus, high-resolution dome drives with programmable software.

When our Bench Testers looked at this model they concluded: "The use of plastics has enabled Pelco to develop a compact, lighter, faster and more responsive mechanism – altogether this dome is a highly potent package."

It’s tough on the streets!

The new Armaview vandal resistant dome is so tough, says manufacturer Genie CCTV, it can stand the weight of a seven-ton lorry driving over it, making it suitable “in the meanest of environments”.

Designed for external or internal use in any situation where cameras are vulnerable to attack or anti-social behaviour, its heavy duty cast aluminium body and extra high strength, impact-resistant polycarbonate dome make it capable of withstanding the most determined of attacks.

Weather sealed to IP65 to prevent the ingress of moisture, the dome can be either wall or ceiling mounted. It can accommodate a wide range of colour and mono cameras and lenses including varifocal auto iris, to suit virtually any requirement, and features fully adjustable universal camera mounts with multiple cable entry points, making it installer friendly.

The Armaview is available in two sizes (7.6 or 10.1cm).

Network models

The newest of Panasonic’s network cameras is the fully functional KX-HCM280 dome. With a 360-degree observation and pre-set position capability, you can now monitor a wide range that has been traditionally impossible, says Panasonic, with just one network camera. Able to be desk or ceiling mounted, the KX-HCM280 offers remote PTZ capabilities with a 21x optical zoom, 380,000 pixel colour CCD image sensor and automatic and manual focusing features, in order to provide detailed and distinct images.

Motion JPEG displays of up to 30 frames per second and its inbuilt alarm mode mean images can be transferred via email or TP when the alarm is activated. The manufacturer has also released the WV-NS320 Series of network colour domes (above right). Suitable for use in bank or building society branches, retail or commercial outlets, the series can be connected to both analogue and digital networks.

The compact unit combines colour camera, zoom lens and pan/tilt mechanisms. When connected to an Ethernet network you can both monitor it and monitor its images from a personal computer.

It can also be used with an analogue colour composite signal, as part of an existing surveillance system.

With input from a motion detector or external sensor, it can automatically store images and attach them to an email, or control external devices to turn on lights or start surveillance recording.

The cameras also have Flip-A-Chip, which makes it easy to capture subjects passing directly below the camera.

The image-hold feature prevents blurring when the camera moves and pre-set positions simplify operation.
