Findings of the HSE's Construction Statistics Report make for grim reading as plumbing, heating and ventilation engineers neared the top of the list for occupations suffering the highest number of major or fatal workplace injuries.
With 304 reported injuries, the hvac trades featured higher on the HSE injuries list than roofers and cladders, who collectively accounted for 132 fatal or major injuries during 2004/5.
The only sector with more injuries reported was the woodworking trades, with a total of 323. Overall, there were 71 fatal injuries to workers in 2004/5, the same as for 2002/3. However, this is seen as an improvement as there have been more workers operating within the industry. The fatality rate of 3·4 per 100 000 workers is the lowest on record.
