Cherry is the fatal fruit
Five people were killed in accidents relating to cherry pickers in Britain between 1995 and 2002. This gruesome harvest has prompted the HSE to issue an information sheet giving full guidance on how to use the machines safely.
Five people were killed in accidents relating to cherry pickers in Britain between 1995 and 2002. This gruesome harvest has prompted the HSE to issue an information sheet giving full guidance on how to use the machines safely.
The guidance is a result of the HSE analysing incidents relating to mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPS) collapsing, overturning, being trapped against walls or being hit by vehicles.
The research uncovered that the principle causes of incidents were equipment failure, poor ground conditions, unused outriggers, collisions with other vehicles and overloading carriers. The guidance recommends full ground inspection, proper assessment of the MEWP being considered for use, and proper fall protection equipment (consisting of a work restraint and fall arrest system).
